Unfortunately Shaun and I will have to miss the Willo Enduro this year; it is a shame but the Cape Epic is a big race and opportunities to go there with good form and a great team mate don’t come along every day.
The Willo has special meaning for those that knew, or knew of James. But it is more than that; it is a great race in its own right. It is achievable for novices and challenging for the elite, it is close to Canberra and Sydney and it has a fun course and a happy atmosphere. This year it has even more significance as the first round of the MTBA National XCM Series, which will see 7 races all around the country run between now and October. I think this model for a national XCM series that draws on the success of pre-existing races with significant investment from MTBA is a good one, and I am looking forward to travelling to all the other races. After the success of the revamped national XC and DH series’ I am really excited about the XCM series and hope that it is well supported.
I will no doubt have plenty of opportunity to remember James over at the Cape Epic, but I will be missing what has become one of my favourite racers on the calendar. To everyone that makes it to Wingello on the 22nd March, have fun and race hard!
